Hungary’s first integrated “Tram-Train” system was implemented between the cities of Szeged and Hódmezővásárhely.
Tram-Train vehicles can run on both railway and tram tracks according to the respective traffic rules, offering a direct link between the two cities.
The project covered the following construction contracts:
- Szeged – Hódmezővásárhely railway construction works
- Szeged – Hódmezővásárhely urban railway construction works and
- Szeged – Hódmezővásárhely supplementary construction works.
Szeged – Hódmezővásárhely tram-train project: railway construction works
The 22 km long section between Szeged-Rókus junction and Hódmezővásárhelyi Népkert was modernised with increasing the speed limit to 100 km/h on the existing railway track.
The planned timetable required the construction of a new, second track between Szeged-Rókus junction – Baktó junction and Sártó junction – Kopáncs station. The Tisza bridge at Algyő was reinforced and also partially renovated.
Project execution involved the modernisation of the facilities of Algyő station (new passenger platform, P+R parking lot), as well as the partial reconstruction of Algyő station building and the full reconstruction of Hódmezővásárhelyi Népkert station building. The interlocking system was also modernised and centralised traffic control was installed in the Szeged-Rókus junction – Hódmezővásárhelyi Népkert section.
Szeged – Hódmezővásárhely tram-train project: urban railway construction works
Connected to the railway construction works, a single-track urban tram line was built in Hódmezővásárhely in 3.6 km length with 5 stops and one terminus.
The line branches off from the railway line at Hódmezővásárhelyi Népkert stop and runs to the terminus built next to Hódmezővásárhely station via Ady Endre street – Tóalj street – Szőnyi street – Andrássy street – Bajcsy Zsilinszky street.
The project included the construction of the tram track, tram stops and the adjoining road pavements, parking lots and road intersections. This section was equipped 600 V-DC overhead catenary network (complete system), including a transformer.
Szeged – Hódmezővásárhely tram-train project: supplementary construction works
This part involved the establishment of a complex maintenance base (train depot) suitable for all vehicle types.
In line with the Operator’s requirements, the maintenance base of Tram-train vehicles, new and existing railway passenger cars was established in MÁV-START Zrt’s premises, between the locomotive depot and the storage tracks, ensuring that all vehicle maintenance activities can be performed in one place.
The train depot provides, among other things:
multi-level stands for the simultaneous examination of tram-train vehicles, multiple units and rail cars,
modern tools, equipment, diagnostic devices for repair and maintenance works,
tracks and turnout connections ensuring easy access and bypass of facilities,
a site arrangement that follows the technological sequence.
